How to Calculate Building Materials: Bricks, Cement and Mortar

Planning a project or renovation without wasting material requires precise calculations of inputs such as bricks, cement, sand and mortar.

1. Calculation of Bricks per Square Meter ($\text{m}^2$)

The quantity of bricks depends on the dimensions of the block and the type of laying (standing or laying brick).

$\text{Tijolos por m}^2 = \frac{1}{(\text{Comprimento do tijolo} + \text{Junta}) \times (\text{Altura do tijolo} + \text{Junta})}$

Example (Bahian brick with 6 holes $9\times19\times19\text{ cm}$):

For $1\text{ cm}$ ($0,01\text{ m}$) gaskets: $\text{Área do bloco} = (0,19 + 0,01) \times (0,19 + 0,01) = 0,20 \times 0,20 = 0,04\text{ m}^2$ $\text{Quantidade por m}^2 = \frac{1}{0,04} = 25\text{ tijolos/m}^2$

It is recommended to add a 10% safety margin for losses and breakages.

2. Calculation of Mortar and Floor Covering

For tiles and porcelain tiles, the calculation of the average yield of the adhesive mortar is:

  • Single layer: $\sim 4\text{ a }5\text{ kg/m}^2$
  • Double layer: $\sim 8\text{ a }10\text{ kg/m}^2$
